General Info

- Fire safety is job one! There is no fire department on the island and fire insurance is not available. Currently there are three fire extinguisher located in cabin, 1.) Behind the door of the big bunkhouse. 2.) In the green cabinets above the diesel generator. 3.) In the storage building on the shelves just inside the door to the right.

- The green lights are stored on pegs in the storage building. Use a splitter and extention cords to connect the outdoor plug located by the cabanna serving window

- The low level lighting string around the top of the downstairs deck can be plugged into an outdoor plug located near the fish cleaning station

Electrical System

- The electrical power is supplied by a combination of generator power and solar generated power. There is a software controlled switch that switches, according to pre-programmed conditions, between the generator and the solar power.

- There is a 12KW diesel generator located in the gen shed that is connected through a software controlled switch that can supply cabin power and charge batteries.

- The diesel generator has a 125 gallon tank. There is a small pump located near the tank with clearly marked input and output hoses for pumping diesel from portable cans to the tank. Diesel usage should be calculated based on 1/2 gallon per hour.

- There is a 7.5KW running gasoline powered generator stored in the storage building that can act as a backup to the diesel generator should the need arise. Calculate fuel usage at 0.5 gal/hr. Once the backup generator is connected it will supply power to power the cabin needs along with recharging the solar batteries.

- The procedure for disconnecting the diesel generator and connecting the gas generator is as follows: 1.) Diesel generator off, pull the four prong 240V plug from the wall recepticle located just in front of the generator near the floor. 2.) Run the plug and cord through the black portal on the floor after unscrewing the lid of the portal. 3.) Wheel the gas generator from the storage building over to the gen shed near where cord comes through the floor. 4.) Start gas generator. 5.)After gas generator is running smoothly, connect four prong plug to the appropriate plug on the generator. The gas generator connected this way will power the cabin and charge solar batteries.

- The solar system is comprised of 20 solar panels, 16 Twelve volt solar batteries connected as eight 24 volt banks, a charge controller, and inverter.

- The breaker panel for the cabin is located upstairs in the double door closet by the bathroom

Water System

- None of the water at the cabin should be considered potable. Bottled water must be used for all consumption, including brushing teeth.

- The water is supplied by pumping from rain water collection tanks located between the bunkhouse(2500 gal and 1500 gal) and storage building and a 1000 gal tank behind the generator building. For a description of how the the various tanks are connected to the water pump click the Water Winterize link above.

- The AC water pump for the cabin is located in the gen shed along with a pressure tank. There is an on/off switch labeled water pump and located on the wall near the pump. The water pump should be switched off when your trip is concluded, as described in the Departure check list.

- Upon arrival for your cabin visit, flip the pump switch to on. If the pump does not reach shut off pressure within a few minutes, priming may be required. For priming procedure see Water Winterizing link above under DeWinterizing section.

- There is a shallow water well located on the front right corner of the storage building. The water from this well is plumbed to the fish cleaning station and sprinkler system. This water is mostly fresh to brackish depending on recent rains.

- During dry periods, should we run out of rain water, water is pumped via a garden hose from the well to the 1000 gal tank only. There are valves located in the gen shed to switch off the 2500 and 1500 tank sources and only draw from the 1000 gal tank. By only using the 1000 gal tank for well water we ensure the 2500 and 1500 tanks only ever have fresh water in them.

- Collected rain water is a precious resource and every attempt at conservation is appreciated. For example, minimize toilet flushes, take "military style" showers (get wet, turn water off, lather up, rinse), etc

- The septic system is two fifty gallon tanks and a field line. Capacity is limited. The first 50 gallon tank is for solids and the second for liquids. The field line runs toward the jetty rocks. When with a large group it is recommended that as many people as possible use the outdoor shower thereby lowering the amount of water passing through the septic system as the outdoor shower drains on the sand.

Propane Gas System

- All propane gas needs in the cabin are serviced from one connection point located in the Garage directly under the hot water heater. The connection point is the same as would be found on most modern home gas appliance such as gas grills, etc.

- Typically, a 20lb refillable tank is connected to service the cabin needs and will last one to two trips. Spare tanks are kept on hand and are stored in the storage building

- The gas appliances in the cabin are hot water heater, cantina griddle and gas burners, and the upstairs oven and stove.

- There is a gas shut-off valve located behind the cantina griddle that must be turned on before using the griddle and closed upon concluding each trip

- There are propane cookers used for frying and boiling located in the storage building. Use one of the spare tanks for the propane cookers instead of disconnecting and reconnecting the tank supplying the cabin.
